Maa Palaeokastro Settlement
This site is a settlement which can be found on the western coast of the island near to Coral Bay and is 10km north west of Paphos city centre. The imposing defensive walls gave the site its name of Palaeokastro which means the old castle. The Mycenaean Greeks who arrived on the island around 1200 BC settled in this area.
The site is well known for its fortification walls, reminiscent of Mycenaean Cyclopean architecture can be seen here where visitors will see how the steep cliffs and large ashlar blocks on the other sides of the site provided protection to the inhabitants of Maa.
The fortifications of the settlement are made up of two separate walls. The first wall protected the settlement from the land and blocked the width of the narrowest part of the peninsula. The second provided protection from the sea due to it being located on the edge of the peninsula next to the sea
Many archaeological scientists believe the destruction of Maa and other Late Bronze Age sites was due to the appearance of what is known as the Sea People which have been blamed by scientists for causing wide spread disorder and destruction throughout the Eastern Mediterranean towards the end of the Bronze Age.
Paphos international airport lies just a few kilometers from the centre of the town and alternative means of transport other than hiring a car include booking a private airport transfer where your very own personal driver will meet you in arrivals or you can pre book a seat on a private shuttle bus which is a slightly cheaper option.
